Diversity, inclusion and equity
Ultimately Better and its staff are committed to providing a safe, fair, inclusive and progressive environment for employees and freelancers, allowing them to perform at their best whatever their background, ethnicity, religion, age group, sexual orientation, gender identity and more besides.
Led by a female, queer, neurodiverse founder in a male dominated industry, we walk the walk on diversity and inclusion from day one. Our interviewing process is designed to support people who need more time over questions, or who may struggle with the pressure of an intense one on one format. Any skills testing is done at your pace, not ours, and applicants are compensated to ensure they’re not unfairly missing out by taking the time to apply.
Beyond interviewing, we meet employees where they’re at. For us, that means things like:
- giving job briefs in a format that is most accessible and useful to the individual employee – e.g. written or verbal, through demonstrative videos or on screen examples
- providing training in a format that our staff prefer, e.g. courses to be completed alone, or pair programming to learn together
- limiting direct client interactions for those staff members with social anxieties or with auditory processing issues
- providing a contact as a go between to moderate or translate “tech speak” to client terminology and vice versa
Beyond day to day work, we try to offer salaries at an industry standard level with all employees and freelancers guaranteed the real living wage as a minimum. We have a generous holiday package and we support staff in making last minute changes to their hours to accomodate childcare, bereavement, menopause or menstrual issues, and more.
We try to reflect our policy of inclusion across both our company website and the websites we build by aiming to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines & we encourage our clients to do the same.
Regardless of the current political landscape and the questionable choices made by companies bigger and richer than us, we stand by our commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity now and always.
