SEO Lead
We are looking for a fully remote experienced SEO Lead. This is a part time, salaried, UK-based role.
Who are we?
Ultimately Better are a small, predominantly Midlands-based, WordPress agency with clients across the globe. We specialise in performant WordPress development and technical SEO, working with a range of clients across multiple sectors and specialities. Our work involves new project builds, bespoke development, WordPress migrations, WooCommerce integration, Gutenberg conversions, performance and conversion rate improvements, as well as ongoing maintenance and retainer work for a mix of new and existing clients.
Due to continuing expansion of the Ultimately Better client base we’re looking to take on a part time SEO Lead to support our existing SEO and development team in auditing and optimising our client’s WordPress websites.
At Ultimately Better, long term client happiness – and therefore retentation – is more important than chasing the “next big shiny”, so delivering impeccable results is crucial.
About the role
The basics:
- Location: fully remote (based within the UK) but we meet up a few times a year (optional)
- Salary: £35,000 – £40,000 pro rata
- Hours: 18-24 hours per week spread out any way you like
As an example, with a full-time salary of £35,000 based on 37.5 hours per week, working 20 hours per week would give you a pro-rata salary of approximately £18,667
One of our core tenets as a company is that of flexibility, both in how we support our clients needs and how we support our employees. As such, although we’re advertising this role with a set number of hours, we’d still love to hear from people who might want to work a little bit more or a little bit less. We are able to accommodate term time only contracts / people who can only work during school hours.
Message from the MD
As an employer (and a decent person, hopefully) I am committed to providing a safe, fair, inclusive and progressive environment for my employees and freelancers, allowing them to perform at their best whatever their background. I strongly encourage applications from folk across all ethnicities, religions, age groups, sexual orientations, gender identities and more besides.
As a female, queer, neurodiverse founder in a male dominated industry I know it can be difficult to figure out if you “measure up” to job ads and boring lists of technical skills that might be worded in an unfamiliar way or list things you’ve never heard of before. If after reading this job ad’ you’re still not sure – apply anyway. I want to hear from you. If I don’t feel like you’re the right fit at this time, I will endeavour to let you know and explain why, to the best of my ability.
Look forward to reading your application.

Core skills and responsibilities
Here’s the sort of skills we’d expect our ideal SEO Lead to have:
- You will own, develop and scale our organic search (SEO and GEO) strategies for a range of clients to grow website visibility, traffic, and sales/conversions.
- You will have strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data from multiple industry standard SEO tools to perform keyword and competitor research, make data-driven decisions, track KPIs, and use the information to set short and long term goals.
- You will have the ability to conduct technical website audits and content analysis, looking at site structure, performance, customer experience, page optimisation, mark-up quality, conversion data and more.
- You will have the ability and desire to deliver regular updates on performance metrics and strategic roadmaps to retainer clients (client-facing communication skills).
- You will be able to guide our team of developers and SEO executives to implement the strategies as necessary.
- You will have an understanding of basic accessibility principles, and why they matter at every stage of website development.
Optionally, if you also have knowledge of the following, it’s a huge plus (but not compulsory):
- Knowledge of social media marketing and/or broader marketing strategy to advise internally
- Basic content / copywriting skills (polishing client copy, not large-scale writing)
- Working knowledge of the WordPress dashboard, and experience with commonly used WordPress plugins like Yoast SEO
- Able to take a client’s initial thoughts and your own research and turn them into a clear site structure, page hierarchy and briefs that our designers and developers can work from.
- An understanding of CRO and UX principles
And we’d ideally like to see some of the following ‘soft’ skills too:
- The ability to distil your knowledge into plain English – our clients often understand why they need to rank, but not always how to go about it, and rely on us to help explain.
- Willingness to learn new ways of doing things and share your own knowledge – we’re a small company and mutual understanding helps everyone work better together.
- An ability to manage workload effectively, and adjust to changing priorities if required.
- Excellent written communication skills – we predominantly communicate via digital tooling (and try to avoid pointless meetings).
- Good support ticket discipline, with an understanding of the value of administrative tasks in a distributed work environment.
- Great team player, you will be working closely with our admin team to plan, prioritise, and help deliver results.
- Good communication about your availability. We’re genuinely flexible, but just need to be kept updated so we know when we can catch up, or when we can get something to a client.
We know that you may not tick all of these boxes but we’d still like to hear from you if you think you can pick up some of the rest with guidance and support. You may also have some skills we’ve not thought to mention – we’d love to hear about those too!
We’re looking for someone with around 3 years experience or more, ideally including agency or multi-client work.
On AI
We use some AI tooling and expect you will too. You’ll know where they speed up SEO work and where they get things wrong. Clients pay for your expertise, so everything you deliver needs to be human, be factually correct, backed by real data, and something you’d put your name to.
Benefits
We don’t have a fancy office, we don’t have a beer fridge or a breakout room with an xbox, but we do have a lot of experience in supporting clients in the WordPress industry whilst growing the skillset of our employees from a range of backgrounds. We want you to work in a supportive, inclusive environment with opportunities for personal and professional growth. But… enough marketing talk, let’s get real.
All Ultimately Better Ltd employees get:
- flexitime – work your way, during hours that suit you (some hours needed during core ‘office hours’)
- automatic pension enrolment where applicable
- flexible holiday policy with minimum one week per quarter
- additional maternity and paternity pay (3 months at full pay, SMP thereafter where qualified)
- sick pay (up to one week at full pay, statutory sick pay thereafter)
- your birthday off (unless you really want to work it, I guess)
- ‘workaversary’ gift on each anniversary of your start date
We also regularly attend conferences such as WordCamps, Women in Tech SEO, BrightonSEO etc, and employees are invited to attend post-probation if desired (costs covered).
Applications
To apply for this role please send:
- A cover letter/brief introduction
- Your CV
- An example of SEO work you’ve completed, with a short explanation of the brief and why you’re proud of it
…to our Managing Director, Jem Turner (she/her) on jem@ultimatelybetter.com.
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a short task based on a sample client brief. It should take around two hours, you can do it in your own time, and we’ll pay you for it. We’ll then talk it through at interview, in whatever format works best for you.
Please don’t use AI to write your application. It’s obvious, and off-putting. Your application will be reviewed by people, not robots, and we expect you to meet us on the same level.
